From Old To New: The Rising Trend Of Jewellery Remodelling
The Simon Wright Jewellery team may spend a good part of their time creating some of the finest reproduction jewellery and bespoke engagement rings London has to offer, but every once in a while, we will have a customer who is keen to find out how old jewellery can be remodelled into new and would like a ring inspired by vintage pieces of jewellery that they own. Often the vintage jewellery has been passed down to them, anything from bespoke earrings to brooches, and they are looking to create something new, while retaining the appeal of the original piece.
As Simon Wright Jewellery often bases many of its designs on antique jewellery, this is always an enjoyable challenge, especially hearing about the family heirloom’s story! This allows us to bring together the new and the old by using old designs with new materials and techniques, such as 3D CADCAM technology.
We also have clients approach us wanting to know how to upcycle jewellery, a process in which we take elements from existing jewellery, which are then repurposed. Jewellery passed down from generation to generation has great sentimental value attached to it, so we understand the joy that comes with remodelling old jewellery.
Jewellery remodelling is a great solution if you have inherited old jewellery that isn’t your style, if you have broken jewellery put away for safekeeping, or if you are simply looking for something new to be made from an old heirloom. In fact, jewellery remodelling has become very popular in recent years and it is easy to see why. There is an environmental benefit to upcycling jewellery, by repurposing those precious gemstones, you save the need for more to be mined. There is also the financial benefit, of course!
Earlier this year, we had a customer who came to us with a gorgeous family brooch that had been handed down to him. It was extremely important to him to incorporate this precious piece of jewellery into his future fiancé’s diamond engagement ring. Here is a little record of our process from antique heirloom, to a sparkling new engagement ring!
1. Our customer showed us some design ideas that he particularly liked at a design discussions with Simon, which is an extremely important part of the process, especially when antique jewellery is involved.
2. During the next few days and weeks, ideas were discussed back and forth to ensure that Simon Wright Jewellery made the perfect engagement ring for our customer, both aesthetically and structurally, all while keeping that lovely charm of the original piece.
3. And finally, the sparkling end result! The Simon Wright Jewellery team were pretty proud of this one. Whilst creating a new diamond engagement ring, Simon managed to retain some of the brooch's influence in the final design. As well as incorporating some little features such as the gorgeous filigree work underneath, to echo the era of the original piece.
