An Alternative to Teal Sapphire Engagement Rings

Teal sapphires are having a moment.

These rare, coloured stones exhibit a beautiful marine green-blue, a unique colour that has only recently become popular in the West, but which has held significance in Eastern and Middle-Eastern cultures for centuries. For example, Tibetan Buddhists believe teal signifies the infinity of the sea and the sky, while for the ancient Egyptians, it represented truth and faith. This symbolism makes teal sapphires an ideal choice for engagement rings, for the romantically minded.

Is A Teal Sapphire Engagement Ring Right For You?

But is it really a teal sapphire that you’re looking for? Many of our customers are surprised to find it’s not!

Unlike blue sapphires in other shades, which often come from Sri Lanka or Myanmar, many teal sapphires originate from Australia. While newer sources have been unearthed recently, which can be darker, the smaller supply of good stones can be a problem. This rarity, along with high demand, make them quite hard to come by.

We also find that the colour of a true teal sapphire is sometimes not exactly what our customers expect. While the rarest and most valuable teal sapphires do come in a rich blue-green hue, most teal sapphires show a gradient of shades, with varying degrees of blue, green, yellow, and grey.

Tourmaline Gemstones Are The Perfect Alternative

If you’re having trouble sourcing a teal sapphire, or the colour isn’t quite what you had in mind, a great alternative is a beautiful coloured gemstone that not many people have heard of: tourmaline. Tourmaline comes in a stunning array of colours, from deep reds, to gold, to -you guessed it- teal. Tourmalines often have the aquamarine colour saturation that those interested in teal sapphires are looking for.

It’s important to note that tourmalines are a beautiful and highly sought-after gemstone in their own right. This means that they’re not necessarily cheaper than teal sapphires, but they do often have that mesmerizing, ‘just stepped off the boat in Bora Bora’ blue that customers are looking for.
